Flash's Use on the Web

Flash is one of the most commonly used methods of posting interactive content to the internet. Streaming flash video is one of the best methods of delivering content to users. There are some people who are migrating to using Flash as the whole content of the website. This is a dangerous position to be in if you are counting on people being driven to your site through natural Search Engine Optimization since a search bot cannot view the contents of the flash file.

If you choose to build a site solely from Flash you will need to take extra measures to make sure bots are able to index your site correctly. There are ample tutorials on how to accomplish this and Google's article offers their solution if you are making a page that has only flash content.

I typically do not make a page that is totally Flash driven. I like to employ Javascript interactions using excellent tools such as Prototype or Scriptaculous as they have very similar effects that do not effect search engines.

So when trying to decide whether to use Flash you should think of the extra work that will be involved to have your pages ranked highly on search engines such as Google. If you are not worried about Search Engine rankings then a completely Flash Driven site can look very professional and be a great portfolio piece.
